Parliamentary body asks to investigate ‘irregularities' in land acquisition for PBI office in Cox’s Bazar

Today, a parliamentary body formed a sub-committee of three members to investigate alleged irregularities in the acquisition of one acre and 100 decimals of land in order to build a Police Bureau of Intelligence in Cox's Bazar.

At a meeting at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, the parliamentary standing committee for land ministry reached the final decision.

Mokbul Hossain (chief of the parliamentary watchdog) told The Daily Star that Habibur Rahman, Ruling Awami League MP from Bogura-5, was elected as the convener of this sub-committee. Umme Fatema Begum and Monoranjan Shilgopal, AL MPs from Dinajpur-1, were also made members.

The sub-committee had to submit its report within one month to the main committee.

Mokbul Hossain, who emerged from the meeting, said that The Daily Star had published a May report on widespread irregularities in the acquisition of land for a PBI office. It was located in Kolatoli Bypass Road, which is adjacent to Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway.

"After reviewing the report, the committee believes that there were many instances of forgery in the land acquisition process. Mokbul Hossain said that the committee discovered that huge amounts of money were misappropriated by land acquisition process forgery.

Mokbul said that actual victims did not get the money, but a syndicate stole huge amounts of money by forging during the land acquisition process.

The meeting was attended by Monoranjan ShilGopal, Saifuzzaman Cloughhury, Mohammad Habibur Rahman and Mohammad Shahjahan Mia. Also, Umme Fatema Nazma Begum, Mohammad Aminul Islam and Mohammad Shahjahan Mia were there.

The Committee recommends that all employees of the Office for the Assistant Commissioner (Land), who have served three years, be transferred as soon as possible.

The meeting recommended that the necessary steps be taken to ensure that Guchhgram's allottees are still living there and that investigations are conducted to determine if lands leased for agricultural use are being used for any other purposes.
